A Writer's Blog http://matthewcarney.net/blog1 Writing, public health, political rants, whatever won't fit on Twitter Thu, 04 Mar 2010 21:52:09 +0000 http://wordpress.org/?v=2.8.4 en hourly 1 Entering the doldrums of pharmaceutical research? http://matthewcarney.net/blog1/2010/03/04/entering-the-doldrums-of-pharmaceutical-research/ http://matthewcarney.net/blog1/2010/03/04/entering-the-doldrums-of-pharmaceutical-research/#comments Thu, 04 Mar 2010 21:30:53 +0000 Administrator http://matthewcarney.net/blog1/?p=9 As the economy digs in to a long slow post-recession recovery, as lucrative patents expire, and as the debate over healthcare reform reaches a crescendo in Washington, Big Pharma is bracing itself. Up until now, the research that brings an innovative drug to market has taken upwards of a billion dollars and years through the FDA’s regulatory pipeline. The money for that research comes from profits on existing drug sales, as well as venture capital.  As an investment, drugs research has both made sense and made money. Sales of widely used drugs, protected for years, and sometimes decades, by generous patents, can earn as much as a billion dollars in under just a couple of years.

This is about to change. Republicans and Democrats, while differing widely on strategy, both concede that the rising costs of healthcare, if not regulated in one way or another, will bankrupt the coffers and leave us all without adequate medical care- this while our population ever expands into those care-needing golden years. Wall Street, always skittish around Government intrusion, is now particularly weary.

Big Pharma, usually a bell-weather in unstable economic climates, is feeling the pinch and consolidating operations, and reducing the number of potential new drugs in their pipelines. This means fewer new drugs to market.

What effect will this have on our healthcare? Expect prescription prices to drop as patents expire, and availability to be enhanced by a lessening of restrictions on imports from countries like Canada and India. That’s the good news.

On the other hand, despite recent technical advances in genetics, genomics, proteomics, and biochemistry, expect fewer innovations and fewer new treatments.

Cafe Culture in Raleigh, NC… http://matthewcarney.net/blog1/2010/03/04/cafe-culture-in-raleigh-nc/ http://matthewcarney.net/blog1/2010/03/04/cafe-culture-in-raleigh-nc/#comments Thu, 04 Mar 2010 20:51:39 +0000 Administrator http://matthewcarney.net/blog1/?p=7 I’m here at Helios in downtown Raleigh, NC. What strikes me most about this place, other than the fact that at 2:30 in the afternoon on a Thursday there is no seating, is that while they serve the very best coffee around, the place is a bit of a mess. The walls are white and cold, the floor is that bespeckled cement from the hallways of your primary school, and the staff are all sideways and bleary-eyed college students with no energy- despite all the high octane coffee around them.

Why am I here? Well, this is really the closest it gets to any legitimate urban cafe culture in Raleigh, and what better place to write than a cafe?! What better place to set up a new blog?!

So, why am I really here at 2:30 on a Thursday? Well, my friends, that is another story, now isn’t it….

Welcome to Matt Carney’s blog… A writer’s blog… http://matthewcarney.net/blog1/2010/03/04/hello-world/ http://matthewcarney.net/blog1/2010/03/04/hello-world/#comments Thu, 04 Mar 2010 11:59:20 +0000 Administrator http://phillycoolrob.com/wordpress_281/?p=1 This is the first of many posts, which, I hope, will bring you into the mind and the process of story creation. I expect this environment to be used as a free exchange of ideas and commentary, and often, even debate. Hopefully, this blog may even inspire you toward your more creative persuits.

Most who know me have come to know a person who is engaged with the world on many levels. I am a steady consumer of world events, and a student of human behavior, and it’s out of the soup of our world and our people that my worlds, and the characters that inhabit them, are given life. My stories will take you to settings familiar and unfamiliar alike, where you will traverse the uncomfortable terrain of conflict and struggle. In the characters I create you will find the  elements of strength and weakness which shape us all, though explored through the focused lense of plot. Above all, however, the tales I spin are mirrors that will entertain you with the goal of giving you a new perspective on our own story, where we are the characters, and where the world is ours.

    Welcome to a writers blog.
